How to: Procrastinate

When studying for [insert appropriate action here], one does get distracted. In my case, I am studying for the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Personal Trainer Exam. This exam, along with the study material, is super in-depth, specific, and well, hard. This is the “top” certificate you can get in the fitness industry, along with a few others, so as I read, study, and try to learn these concepts, pathways, and exercise prescription movements, have fun with this list of how to procrastinate.

How To: Procrastinate

1. Make a list of how to procrastinate.

2. Doodle on a piece of paper. These doodles can be 3-dimensional squares, hearts, circles, squiggles, lines, dots, dashes, or any other mark your pen wants to make.

3. Switch pen colors and type to see which one “writes” the best.

4. Browse your favorite blogs.

5. Text message your friends… or a stranger.

6. Grab a(n unneeded) snack. I prefer homemade raw cookies… or veggies… if there is hummus involved.

7. Write a blog post. It doesn’t need to be interesting, as you can see, just any old post will do. I enjoy living by example.

8. Make a list of to-do items or menu ideas for the day/week.

9. Google the word procrastinate.

10. Successfully “publish” a completely [un]useful post for the world to read. Perhaps it gave you some ideas?

There you have it. My list of how to procrastinate. I hope you learned a lot (about who I am and what goes on in this weird brain of mine). That was my list… but for an even better list…

What does your procrastination list look like? I know you’ve got one.

Hmmm… that was fun. Now back to studying. :)

Pssst! Pass it on...

What a fantastic post! This speaks to many of us in many walks of life, I’m sure.

I loved all the illustrations – you sure are creative with your procrastination – you have produced a work of art there!

Something I’d like to throw into the mix in the aim of compassion is to mention that many of us procrastinators are multitaskers! This means that often we can fool ourselves out of the most difficult thing (writing, studying, whatever it is) by doing something else that is also important.

So, in order to make my ‘procrastination’ list, I have to define what it is that I’m doing. If I’m working on my poetry writing, gardening might be procrastinating. But if I really need to get some weeds pulled out of the garden, maybe reading a book is procrastinating!

I’d say that my prime procrastination tactic is reading, whether it’s reading blogs, books, newspapers, browsing online, reading ingredients! And just so that I can always justify myself, I think that pretty much all of it has some potential use, even if it’s diverting me from what I’m supposed to be doing!

love
Ela

I definitely did NOT need a tutorial on this, because I am the QUEEN of it ;-)

LOL, but I enjoyed this post. ACSM is definitely the best of the best–ACE uses all of their material in their cert. I studied the ACSM manual years ago, its VERY clinical, can be a little intimidating…but great info! I was reluctant to do it, so I went with ACE, but defintely study all the ACSM materials and continuing ed! Best of luck studying…STOP DOODLING ;-)

XOXO

ps–your last comment to me totally cracked me up…of course I posted it JUSt for you, but shhhhh, don’t tell anyone ;-)

I so do all of these things. In fact, I think I did them all today.

When I am procrastinating a particular task, I at least try to do something else from my to-do list so that I feel semi-productive. Of course, I also put things like “call mom” and “buy new puzzle” on my to-do list…

I am excellent at prochrastinating. In fact, over the 6 weeks I’ve had off from Uni I’ve had an essay and an exam to study for. Have I done any of it? No. Will I be panicked when I suddenly get back to school and rotations and the deadlines are near? Yes, most certainly. But somehow, the future fear does nothing for me. Human beings are so silly sometimes, this one is at least! :)

hehe whenever I had school work I’d ALWAYS come up with some justification for my procrastination! Your’s are hilarious, love it.
I’d often do the “I’ll do it after” excuse…

I’ll do it after watching this show
I’ll do it after I do the house work
I’ll do it after 5pm
I’ll do it after I lose my sanity

hehe you get the picture :D Good luck with your exam, you’d be an amazing personal trainer!

I tend to do other ‘productive’ but not necessarily critical tasks like cleaning out closets and organizing photos. It’s somehow easier for me to justify doing that than watching TV, even though neither one is making any headway on the actual, necessary task. :)
