New Additions

Oh my. Things are a’changin’ here at What Runs Lori, well actually in Lori’s life. I’m adding so many new things to my life, all at once, and I’m very excited to share them with you (my lovely, devoted, inspiring readers)! Here’s what’s planned for this post:

Email subscriptions! They’re added! You can now subscribe by email to this blog. Every time a new post is created, you’re the first to know! Lucky you.

You may or may not have already seen a new addition to the pages above. I’ve updated most of them and added a new one: Prescription for Change. Check it out. Pretty interesting stuff.

Another new addition to my life is becoming a Team In Training Mentor! Team In Training (TNT), if you don’t already know, is through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Team In Training gets you, yes you, ready for a marathon, half marathon, triathlon, hiking event or 100 mile bike ride. These events take place all around the country and you travel, with your team, to the destination of your choice for your event. Meanwhile, you raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Great cause, good workout, lifelong friends. I participated last year for my first marathon with TNT and raised over $5,000 for LLS! It was a blast meeting, training, and creating bonds with other participants. Anyway, long story short, I’m back as a mentor, to help others achieve their goals- monetary and endurance. I’m very excited! Our first training is next week.

And that leads me to the final new addition: CrossFit. But first, what is CrossFit? From the wonderful Wikipedia sources, CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness methodology. Classes typically include a warm-up, a skill development segment, and ends with a high-intensity workout that lasts around ten to twenty minutes. CrossFit was founded by gymnasts, Greg Glassman and Lauren Glassman. And the first CrossFit affiliated gym opened in Santa Cruz, CA in 1995 (Woot-Woot! I live 20 minutes from Santa Cruz!), and was designed for strength and conditioning for policeman and military personnel.

So that is the brief history. Since my P90X workouts are not what they once were (intensity, strength, etc. have improved) I needed something a bit more… body changing. I tried the first two (free) classes and decided it was for me. I met with the head coach for my gym’s CrossFit program and busted out my first two “Elements of CrossFit” sessions in only one session- so I’m ahead of the game. Also, he thinks that I have what it takes to compete in CrossFit Nationals and Games. Woah. I don’t know if I’m ready to hang with the big boys yet… yet. Why not compete? I’m aiming high on changing my body and gaining muscle. My sole motivation in life is to become as physically fit as I can. Bold statement, yes, but I’m a little obsessed.

One important element to CrossFit is nutrition. Duh. But they instill the necessity to follow a Paleo way of eating. Um, this is far from the way I eat, in most aspects. Paleo Centered on commonly available modern foods, the “contemporary” Paleolithic diet consists mainly of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts; and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. In essence: eating the presumed ancient diet of wild plants and animals that various human species habitually consumed during the Paleolithic. Eating like a caveman. This excludes for me: all grains (quinoa!), legumes (e.g. beans, chickpeas, HUMMUS!), dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.

I’m cool with the no dairy, gluten, wheat, salt, sugar thing but hummus and quinoa are two of my main food groups. I’m definitely going to have to think about this one. From my research (and I’ve done quite a bit), the consumption of animal products increase the risk of Cancer. I’m not going to get into this big debate (which it is) but I would love to know your opinion on the subject. If you do not eat meat, what is your reasoning?

My boyfriend is an excellent cook, which he has proven in the past. Here’s his latest high protein meal:

Wine (of course), lean buffalo meatballs, sauteed spicy shrimp, baked muscles, variety of olives, and salad.

The boyfriend stuffing the muscles with cooked muscle insides, blended with herbs and spices. Topped with bread crumbs (not gluten free, obviously), and topped with fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and paprika.

AND a whole baked fish. The boyfriend knows how to entertain.
