Death By Thrusters. That is what started my morning (and that’s not what she said.. I know you were thinking it.). If you don’t already do CrossFit, try it! It’s amazing… and I promise, you won’t die. (You’ll just be seriously sore. In a good way.)
What is a thruster, you ask. And why on Earth would you consider death by anything other than chocolate?
Do a thruster equal to the minute you are on, for as many minutes as you can. Everyone uses 45 lbs bar. Example: Minute 1, do 1 Thruster. Minute 2, do 2 Thrusters. Minute 3, do 3 Thrusters, and so on.
This sounds simple enough, right? Yeah, for the first 8 minutes or so. And then you get to 15 thrusters and that bar is getting pretty damn heavy and all you want to do is stop. But you keep on going. And then you get to the point where you’re not actually getting a rest, nor putting the bar down between minutes. Ug.
Result: I got through 16 minutes, and at the 17th minute I only performed 16 thrusters, so I was out. But man, what a great workout.
Followed by: Yes, because I just can’t get enough of heart pumping, weight lifting, sweat inducing endorphins, I continued my workout after CrossFit was over.
Since my arms wouldn’t lift over my head after all those thrusters, I decided to focus on legs. (Side Note: I’ve started a lifting routine in addition to my 3 days of CrossFit… just to add in more strength.)
Seated Squats: 3 sets of 8 (plates equaling 160 lbs)
Seated Calves: 3 x 20, 1 x 15 (plates equaling 160 lbs)
One-leg Deadlift: 2 x 10 (50 lbs)
One-leg deep squats (Pistols) each leg: 2 x 3 (weighted 15 lbs) 1 x 6 (unweighted)
And that leads me to Friday. Ahhhhh, Happy Friday. I seriously love Fridays. It just means you’re mere hours away from happy hour, driving home from work in traffic, or just throwing all thoughts of work out the window (unless you work on the weekends, and in that case, I am sorry).
Fridays also mean it’s the weekend and for me, I have plenty of time for cooking!
Can’t you tell I’m a rock star? I party hard on my weekends.. me and the kitchen. Yeah, lame. But I love just doing nothing (besides cooking, experimenting with food, movie watching, reading. Does this mean I’m old…at my ripe old age of 25?).
I was elated when I went to the grocery store (Safeway of all places) and found kabocha squash. It was calling my name. And since I can’t find it anywhere, so I was pretty excited (again… lame).
Cubed, oiled, baked and topped. That’s how I roll. And that’s how I eat my kabocha.
With a CSA veggie basket delivery every Wednesday, I’ve got a lot of veggies in the house. Too many. But one thing we get every week is a huge stash of basil. And we grow basil. Anyway, what else is there to do with basil besides pesto (and green smoothies)?
- 1 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
- 5 (about 2 tbsp) fresh sage leaves
- 1/2 cup hemp seeds
- Juice of 1 lemon (about 1/3 cup)
- 1/2 – 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 2/3 cup olive oil (more or less as needed)
- splash of cold water
- freshly cracked pepper
Blend all ingredients in a food processor or blender until desired smoothness. Taste, test, and serve (over baked kabocha 😉 ). *Paleo approved.
